If you hire an individual or independent business without coverage, they are considered your worker and you would be liable for their coverage. You can search the WCB Clearance Request System to check if contractors have their own coverage. If they don't, you are required to include their earnings in your payroll calculations.
Service providers and contractors may be considered your workers if you exercise a certain degree of control over the work they are performing. View our Coverage for Contract Workers fact sheet for more information.
If you're still unsure, contact us. We'll determine whether the contractor is considered a worker of your business. Typically, service providers working on a contract basis in mandatory industries who add to the commercial benefit of your business are considered your workers.
Check out our Assessment Schedule for Contract Labour for more information on how to report contractor earnings.
