John Wilton: My name is John W. Wilton but some people called me Fighting Jack.
I helped pioneer Workers Compensation in Manitoba.
But someone before me brought the idea to Canada.
In 1913, Ontario Chief Justice Sir William Meredith completed a three-year Royal Commission where he researched workers compensation laws around the world.
Sir Williams’ recommendations presented in the Meredith report became a foundation for workers compensation all across Canada.
One key recommendation was that employers pay into a large fund for workers, to provide them with fair compensation if ever they’re injured at work.
It’s known as the historical compromise and it’s one that continues to help make life better for workers and employers across Canada and here in Manitoba.
