In 2017, we continued our work to enable industries, employers and workers to reduce injury and illness in their workplaces. Our efforts to establish programs that are changing the landscape of safety in the province also progressed.Perhaps the program with the most “buzz” was SAFE Work Certified, which we launched at the start of 2017. This safety certification program built on the success of certification in the construction sector, where more than 1,100 companies are COR-certified. In 2017, 130 companies across all industries became certified, and many more are currently in the process of attaining certification. SAFE Work Certified is a program for all Manitoba employers − regardless of size, industry or location. Safety certification is proven to reduce the risk of injury and illness to workers. In addition, certification can lead to lower costs, greater employee engagement and higher productivity. Our certification program builds on our work to establish a system of industry-based safety programs, or IBSPs, in our province. I’m proud to say there are now seven such programs in place, an accomplishment that reflects the hard work and commitment of our IBSP partners. In addition to the Construction Safety Association of Manitoba and the Manitoba Heavy Construction Association’s WORKSAFELY program, which are long-established entities, we assisted in establishing the Motor Vehicle Safety Association of Manitoba, RPM Trucking Industry Safety, Made Safe (for the manufacturing sector) and most recently, the Manitoba Farm Safety Program. All of these partners are now providing vital services to their members, including training, consulting and resources that are specifically geared to their industries. In addition, several self-insured organizations have been working to establish an IBSP to meet the needs of large public sector organizations.IBSPs at The SafetysThe success of the IBSP initiative and enthusiasm of all partners was evident at a first-ever gala evening called “The Safetys,” held in the fall. This event provided an opportunity for IBSPs to recognize members of their industries for exceptional efforts in workplace safety and health. We will support The SAFE WORK MANITOBA | 28Safetys again in autumn of 2018, as well as host our annual Committee Leadership Conference, which will mark its fifth year.Awareness CampaignsOur 2017 awareness campaigns aimed to spread the workplace safety message on a number of fronts. Our final campaign of the year, “Safe Work: The Tool for Every Job,” used humour to send a serious message – that safety should really be a part of everything we do in the workplace. We received many positive responses to this campaign. It seems Manitobans are getting the message that safety is a critical tool needed to get the job done. Meanwhile, our Worked Up campaign entered Phase 2. Centred on workers aged 15 to 24, this campaign is vital to our goal of preventing injuries and illnesses. We’re targeting our message not only to young people themselves, but to those who influence them, including parents, teachers and their supervisors in the workplace. Watch for the next segment of our Worked Up campaign a little later in 2018. Last year also saw the creation of strategies focused on psychological health and safety in the workplace; prevention of musculoskeletal injuries; and occupational disease and illness prevention.SAFE Work Manitoba, together with our growing number of partners in the safety community, are contributing to continued improvements in safety and health in our province. All of our efforts are strengthening the culture of safety in Manitoba - ensuring that these improvements continue into the future.Jamie W.
